The coffee etiquette

Coffee is one of the most common and certainly one of the pleasures of life: the morning after getting up, at breakfast, after a morning of hard work, or after a lavish meal ... but just few people know that the drinking and/or serving coffee is a ritual composed by rules which become part of the famous
galateo (etiquette). This “etiquette of Coffee" is a thing coming from the past: in that period every gesture was important and needed to be done in a better way. Today these conventions do not exist anymore and so now it’s only curiosity that’s pushing us in to know “how our daily coffee should be served and drunk”.
The first rule is, if you have guests at home, to serve the coffee on the living room table accompanying it with sweets or confectionery. Also according to the etiquette, coffee should be served by using a fine porcelain cups’ set (saucer and tray have to be used).
You should also ask to your guests how much sugar they need/want: it’s forbidden to serve the sugar according to the host taste/habit. As for the exact dose of coffee, etiquette suggests serving it in preheated cups filled to 2 / 3. It’s also important the choice of the spoons: they must be of a smaller size than the standard one.
Those who come to drink coffee, however, must know that the sugar is mixed by moving the spoon from up to down, and vice versa. The coffee should drunk bringing the cup to the lips using the right hand while the left one holds the saucer … but … what about the left-handed?
