The first coffee bar founded in Italy

The first
bar in Italy was founded in Venice, during the year
1683, under the porticos of Procuratie, in S. Marco square. This “
Bottega del
caffè” (coffee shop) was opened thanks to the discover of a professional
botanic (Mr. Prospero Alfino, 1553-1617) that during a long tour in Egypt,
brought back to Venice the “black drinking with chicory taste” that was used as
medicine.
The coffee
flavour and habit immediately spread all around Italy and so many coffee bars,
where politicians, writers and poets used to meet in, opened very soon also in
Turin, Genoa, Milan, Florence and Rome.
