It seems that coffee reduces the risk of traffic accidents: research published in the British Medical Journal claims that coffee and drinks containing caffeine (tea, cola, energy drinks, etc.) reduce the risk of traffic accidents by as much as 63 percent. The reason? Because you stay more alert and have quicker reflexes.
The study echoes the work of the Australian team led by Lisa Sharwood of "The George Institute for Global Health," in the state of New South Wales, which looked at 500 drivers of large trucks (12-ton mass) who were used to driving very long distances and taking coffee and caffeinated drinks. These data were compared with those of 500 other truck drivers who do not drink these beverages, hence the 63% lower accident risk of coffee addicts.
What can I say ... certainly caffeine helps in driving but while you are behind the wheel, if you feel tired, it is a good rule to stop. Also, it is good not to get distracted while driving and avoid "importing" certain behaviors from overseas where they dabble in driving by drinking huge glasses of coffee.
