For smokers, the combination with coffee is something unique; for doctors, on the other hand, it is a very deleterious combination. We are talking about the coffee plus cigarette association that many use to relax but instead, according to a team of Greek researchers, caffeine and nicotine taken at the same time create a deadly cocktail for our heart.
The effects of smoking on the cardiovascular system are already sadly known but the Greek study, conducted on 24 volunteers and divided into two phases, showed that both substances, taken individually, are harmful to the body. At the same time, however, it showed that in the very short term the damage caused by the simultaneous action of the two substances is greater than that caused by their sum.
In both cases of the study, the degree of stiffening of the aorta and the measurement of blood flow within it were measured, two fundamental parameters for the assessment of cardiovascular risk.
Conclusions: the mechanism that makes this harmful synergy possible is still unclear, but other studies conducted in the past had already shown that the combination of coffee and cigarettes negatively affected blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart attack.
