Coffee appears to have a positive effect in patients with chronic hepatitis C, says a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), published in Hepatology.

The researchers, after monitoring 766 hepatitis C patients for three months who had not responded positively to standard drug treatments, found that drinking three or more cups of coffee a day would reduce the progression of liver disease by 53 percent compared with those who never consumed any.

This would seem to be excellent news given that hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects about 2.2 percent of the world`s population: in fact, an estimated 3 to 4 million people worldwide contract hepatitis each year, 70 percent of whom become chronic patients, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
