Coffee Strong is a very unusual coffee shop that not only has the strange distinction of being a pacifist coffee shop a stone's throw from Fort Lewis (a military base a hundred kilometers from Seattle from which eighteen thousand soldiers left for Baghdad and Kabul), but is also run by former combatants.

Those who enter the restaurant are greeted by a poster reading "support for soldiers who reject war"-in fact, the managers are now on the front lines supporting their former colleagues not to go to the front. They offer as services, in addition of course to coffee and other bar products, phone numbers of lawyers to turn to in case of hazing or abuse of power. There are also job offers to persuade customers to leave the uniform.
