Cream, hot zabaglione, brandy and of course coffee are the ingredients of 'bombardino,' the typical drink of many Italian ski resorts.
According to tradition, the bombardino was the brainchild of a young man from Genoa, who chose to leave the sea to live in the mountains. After a long stint in the Alpini he was given the management of a mountain hut. It was here that four friends sitting at the bar started thinking about a possible cocktail that could warm them from the freezing cold of winter.
Of all the possible combinations, the most promising one was made of milk, whiskey, eggnog and coffee, heated until they were almost boiling hot. One customer tried it and said, "Damn! It's a bombard!" The Genoese man did not repeat it twice and called it Bombardino.
Over time, milk was replaced by cream and whiskey by brandy or rum.
Later, a worker spread the recipe to competing lodges until the bombardino became a commonly served drink in almost every ski resort.
